Empowerment Center/Gage East Apartments

A project for homeless families in the Rochester area is seeking funding for what the planners are calling the "Empowerment Center" to be housed in a former elementary school. Center City Housing Corp., a nonprofit based in Duluth, announced Thursday that more than 80 percent of those that participated in a campaign planning study support the idea of turning the East Gage School site into a community center, to be called the Empowerment Center.

Detailed Description

The Empowerment Center is a collaborative project where multiple agencies with shared goals and values will co-locate to provide programming for low income and homeless families and youth at the old Gage East Elementary School. The focus of programming will be early childhood and school age youth development, education, job training, and mental/physical health support. The Empowerment Center won’t duplicate services already provided in the Rochester community, but will make services more accessible to a larger population in a neighborhood with great need. Focusing on the most vulnerable, the children, our goal is to grow healthy children into healthy adults who will be be ready to work and live in our community. We realize transportation can also be difficult in Rochester and the center will simplify access to needed programming for families and youth, making it easier and more convenient to receive the services needed to break the cycle of homelessness.

About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
