Al Lun representing Rochester Area Foundation and CNG to meet with Wilder Foundation regarding General Community Dashboard requirements, specifications, scope of work and deliverables.

Meeting with Bryan and Craig.

Summary of 2016-03-15 Meeting

1. MN Compass Technical Platform:

Bryan gave me a brief overview of the technical architecture of MN Compass: how data is fed in and fan out and what report generation capability exists. I look forward to having more conversations with Bryan on topics such as Javascript APIs and regional profiles customization. I can see that down the road, SE MN (Southern) and its entities could benefit from knowing more about the customization potential (such as what Duluth has done).

2. Projects in flight

In addition to CNG, Wilder is also working on project proposals with DMC EDA and J2G regarding their dashboards requirements and work scope. For DMC, the deliverable from Wilder appears to be static PDF files that reflect DMC Section 2.4 metrics. The PDF files can be then embedded in the DMC website. The project scope appears to be consistent with what DMC EDA presented to the DMC Board in December. Deliverable from Wilder does not appear to include interactive web capability (meaning drop-down selection dynamic user interface).

Action: Agreed that it would be desirable to review at some future point DMC and other Rochester dashboard project proposals vis-a-vis CNG's.

3. SE MN PlanScape:

I briefed you on the planning landscape of Rochester (SE MN).  My involvement is to help Rochester Area Foundation and JoAnn Stormer.  Rochester Area Foundation/JoAnn has the role of coordinator and fiscal agent for a partnership funding of about $10K.  Olmsted County, City of Rochester have both committed 3K each.  United Way and Rochester Area Foundation also has pledged amounts. CNG is soliciting support from Rochester-area agencies to support this financially in addition to offering guidance to dashboard requirements. To gain community agencies support, we need a statement of work: deliverables, schedule, costs, etc.

Action: Please continue to firm up the project proposal. We should target it to be ready for presentation to the next CNG large group meeting in April. To that end, as soon as a new iteration of the proposal is available, please send them to JoAnn and me. We should also schedule a call with JoAnn to walk through the details.

4. CNG requirements.

I mentioned that CNG's February 25 meeting featured a breakout session on community dashboard requirements. Assumption was that there would be two deliverables:

A. Static Report:  Similar to Compass Point. At first launch, we could be satisfied with similar categories and style as published in Compass Point. Though in the CNG mtg there were additional requirements that we should consider.
B. Website Support.
B.1  We would want to make sure that MN Compass's main site as much as technically possible show metrics for SE Mn (and also if possible be able to drill down to Olmsted County, Rochester level of details). I mentioned that on the Compass site not all metrics shown  have data  points for SE Mn.  3rd Grade Reading Scores by income is an example: http://www.mncompass.org/disparities/income#1-10428-g
If the current Compass data sets do not provide these local insights, our CNG's local groups will need to supplement the data via our own data collections -- not necessarily in the first release of the dashboard but to be phased in future enhancements.
B.2  Please make clear if a $10K contract could also provide a separate website similar to Generation Next http://www.mncompass.org/generation-next/overview
Action: Craig to continue to work on the draft proposal. We should target for a draft status for the CNG Steering Committee Meeting on April 6  to be ready for the April 28 CNG large group meeting.

I will schedule a checkpoint call in a week or two.

About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
