Transportation and Communication

Priorities:

(1) Complete Hwy 14 from Dodge Center to Owatonna, Action: Joined Hwy 14 Partnership

(2) Fund MNDot local bridge and road program

Action: Met with legislators

Next Steps: 1. Reach cities and counties and raise awareness of J2G, (2) gain support for shared legislative priorities

Actions: Held a series of industry roundtables, Mfg, technology, food & dairy and tourism sectors,

Outcome: identify common challenges, skills gaps, immigration laws, health care, regional brand
Next steps: Mfg forum, Gauthier Industries & Harmony Enterprises

MN Partnership

SMIF's  One big thing grant
4 Projects selected, SE MN Together funded.
80K grant, cohesive region, how to work together as a region, 3 conversations, Workforce shortages
330 people came to the conversations, Planning process with more money, seed 4 projects
weave the region together,

(2) Diversity & Inclusion: resource directory; worked with Fatima

(3) Marketing

(3) Housing, Chad Adams .. small cities can use template, childcare, 14 people core team, meet and launch, Rochester Cities Lines, more bus lines to, train bus drivers, Albert Lee learned from Austin to be more welcoming. Various things got launched.

Community design team came to small cities such as Owonoco

Phase 2 project to continue the concept
MN Extension to offer staff time. MN design center .. Tom Fisher to pilot design, Housing Group comes up with a tool kit.


 

Early Childhood Committee

  • Available childcare -- care and education, affect workforce productivity and availability, capacity
  • Fund a study and found 820 slots short, there is some growth of centers coming and bankers to invest
  • Family childcare from 512 to 367 lost 2 dozen this year. Wages is low. Families can't find affordable. 44% to 25% expenses
  • Policies on regulation and payment advocacy
  • Childcare after school
  • Cradle To Growth tie in

CEDA partnership

  • Rural tour ended last week, helped people to tour, people on the bus hear the stories of people,
  • Mayor of Stewartville, how EDA help a company stay in business, Blooming Prairie--spring fed pool, sandy beach
  • Plan Tour on annual basis.
    Legislation -- SE league of cities, economic studies funding with RSP coming forward. Infrastructure and transportation

 

Entrepreneurship

  2. Develop - program or application is being developed
  3. Plan - idea is solid, stakeholders are identified, and there is strong commitment to go forward from all parties.
  4. Concept Phase - idea scoped out with enough details to give an early sizing and/or to build a proof of concept
    demonstration
  5. Pre-concept Phase - an early idea or a requirement.
About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
