Great Lakes Equity Center has identified 6 barriers for equity progress.
Contents
Great Lakes Equity Center has identified 6 barriers for equity progress:
- Lack of common planning time prevent general educators and specialists from ongoing collaboration that would enable effective differentiation of classroom instruction and curricular decisions that reflect instructional needs, strengths and preferences of all students.
- District and building educators' resistance to critical self-examination of power, privilege, and bias that limits opportunities to move beyond personal defenses ....
- District and building practices are inconsistent in using the class tool schedule....
- District and building guidance documents and tools do not explicitly define and articulate equity-oriented practices in the class tools made available to educators.
- District and building level educators do not have high quality formative common assessments across grade levels and content areas.
- Educators, parents and community-members are not provided opportunities to communally identify disparate outcomes by student groups, collaborate on approaches toward more equitable outcomes, and solidify new and/or emerging solutions with their buildings and classrooms on a regular basis.
Being a community activist and wanting to help, the last one is something that I am most interested in seeing progress.
