You’ve shared your priorities, we’ve done our homework, and now we hope you’ll join us in moving forward to collaborative action! Please join the Rochester Area Nonprofit Consortium for “Taking Action to Develop Shared Services.” This 2-hour event will bring local nonprofits together to:
  • Share findings from research on national non-profit collaboration models and community priorities;
  • Determine the top 2-3 priority areas to take action on; and
  • Establish short-term, priority-specific workgroups.

About the Consortium: Funded by the Bremer Foundation, the Consortium was established by local non-profit executive directors in 2017 to explore developing shared services to increase operational efficiencies among area nonprofits. The Consortium is led by an Executive Committee including: Ability Building Center, Channel One, Diversity Council, Families First, Family Service Rochester, IMAA, NAMI SE MN, and Zumbro Valley Health Center.

Exploring Shared Services for Area Nonprofits

 Background: In early 2017, 28 nonprofits came together at the Rochester Area Foundation for the “Committing to Impact Forum” to identify top needs and priorities for local nonprofits. This group, which officially named itself the Rochester Area Nonprofit Consortium, applied for and received grant funding later that year to identify how to meet those needs. With this funding, the Consortium hired Strategist Brooke Carlson of North Sky Health Consulting to assess the Rochester nonprofit landscape, conduct nationwide research, and recommend a path forward for nonprofit collaboration in the area.

 The Consortium is pleased to announce a 30-minute webinar to:

·     Highlight progress to date;

·     Describe how your organization can help create a shared services model; and

·     Provide an opportunity to ask questions.

 Presenters: Consortium Strategist Brooke Carlson and Consortium Executive Committee member and Family Service Rochester Executive Director, Scott Maloney

Faced with a worker shortage and an uncertain funding climate, Rochester area nonprofit groups are exploring ways to band together and work more efficiently. About 30 to 70 area nonprofit entities, mostly in the health and human services sector, have shown an interest in being part of a co-op, in which they'd share human resource managers and information technology services and personnel. They could create pooled health care coverage for their employees and do more joint purchasing. And while it might not save money in all instances, it would improve organizational competency and effectiveness, nonprofit leaders say. The shared concept has worked successfully in other communities. By sharing services and positions across certain support areas, nonprofits are able to focus more time and energy on core programming, leaders say.

In Rochester, talks have been spearheaded by executive directors at five nonprofits, including Dee Sabol at the Diversity Council, Scott Maloney at Family Service Rochester, Courtney Lawson at NAMI, Virginia Merritt at Legal Assistance of Olmsted County, and Jon Losness at Families First.

An estimated 70 executive directors and board presidents of nonprofits have taken part in the talks, including those for the Salvation Army, Arc of Southeastern Minnesota, PossAbilities of Southern Minnesota, Rochester Civic Theatre, YMCA, Hiawatha Homes and Channel One, to name a few.

Project Phase Definitions
The following defines the various project phases:
  1. Available - a product, program or service is in production
  2. Develop - program or application is being developed
  3. Plan - idea is solid, stakeholders are identified, and there is strong commitment to go forward from all parties.
  4. Concept Phase - idea scoped out with enough details to give an early sizing and/or to build a proof of concept
    demonstration
  5. Pre-concept Phase - an early idea or a requirement.
About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
